Some Good News and Some Could Be Worse News (by Mrs. G.)

Today marks Mrs. G’s tenth week of working out three times a week with her trainer, Janelle and a small group of wonderful women. Ingrid is gone; she couldn’t handle Mrs. G’s potent brawn. Kidding. Sadly, she broke a hip. Kidding again. Actually, Ingrid moved on to Extreme Fighting. Not kidding.

Things Mrs. G. hates about working out: any variation of squats, spinning and, most of all, kettlebells—she would tell you why hoisting kettlebells is akin to back labour or being the innocent victim on the receiving end of a teeter totter defector, but she prides herself on limiting TMI when she’s sober.

heathteetertotter

Things Mrs. G. loves about working out: Janelle and her fellow peeps, lifting weights, kickboxing, and any exercise involving the big rubber ball.

Mrs. G. hasn’t written about her workouts because she didn’t want to jinx herself, but she’s knocking on wood as she types this, so she thinks it’s safe to report the good news. She can’t give you an account of her weight, because she has sworn off scales, forever. No more mind focking with the two pounds lost and the four pounds gained…she’s done. Scales have officially surpassed the thing she hates most in life: Febreze. Long story—it’s coming soon.

So:

Before                                      After

Bust: 44.25”                            42.25”

Upper Arm: 15”                        13.5"

Upper Thigh: 25”                      23.50”

Waist: 46”                                38"

Body Fat: 47%                          38%

On a less shallow, celebratory note, Mrs. G's Mom has had a shitty couple of weeks. She found out a few weeks ago that she has cancer on her lip (NOT melanoma). Luckily it hasn’t spread anywhere else She found a good doctor she likes and their treatment plan puts her prognosis in the “highly unlikely to ever come back” category. The pain should be minimal and the scar will be tiny. But yesterday, two days before her scheduled outpatient surgery, she fractured her knee. Mrs. G’s mother is not stoic when it comes to pain. She called Mrs. G. after she got home from the emergency room and spewed a string of cuss words that would have made Whitney Houston and !BO-BBYYY! blush. She called the entire hospital staff—doctors, nurses, administrators, fellow patients—everything but a child of God. And it’s a good damn thing they weren’t chintzy with the Vicodin or heads would have rolled.

Mrs. G. is a believer in universal prayer, meditation and good vibes, so if you have a minute tomorrow, please take a second to send a good thought to her mom…if you've got some benevolence to spare, throw in a little something for Mrs. G’s stepfather since he’s going to have his hands full tending the Sarah Bernhardt of suffering. Mrs. G. talked to him tonight. "Are you ready?" she asked him. "Girl, I was born ready," he said. "She's been gearing up for days. I've stocked up on red wine."

Mrs. G. is heading down in a few days to spell him.

She should return with some good Glenn Beck Stories.

I love you Mom.

Thinking the good thoughts. Come to think of it, perhaps I'll drink some red wine in her (I mean their) honor, as well. It certainly couldn't hurt, right?

Many good thoughts to your mom...

Love the teeter totter defector line, and really? 8" off your waist? You rock!

May 10, 2010 | Unregistered Commentersteph

Missus G is gettin' BUFF! And best wishes all around :)

Definitely thinking the good thoughts for your mom and your stepdad.

I'm so glad you posted an update about working out. I'd thought about emailing you a week or two ago asking if you'd posted an update that I had missed, but then I didn't follow through on that thought. Eight inches off your waist is a helluva loss!! That's a nice decrease on the body fat percentage too.

I've not seen kettlebells before; they look interesting. I *love* squats; alas, my knees don't love them so much anymore -- it's either the extra 40 lbs I'm carrying or the fact that I'm in my 40's, or maybe the combo of the two, but whatever the reason, I miss being able to do squats without my knees aching (arthritis-type aching) and clicking the next couple of days.

Congrats on sticking with it and finding a trainer and a group of co-trainees that you enjoy being around :).

Fractured knee AND cancer? I'd be there helping her husband to stock up on pain relievers. Peace to their household, and peace to you, too, Mrs. G.

Also? My body would like to be taken over by your exercising self.

Crap. Now I HAVE to get that weird spot that won't heal on my lip looked at. Thanks for the nudge. Give your Mom a hug for me and know I'll be thinking of her. I'm so impressed with your exercise progress! Another nudge I need - although a kick in the butt would be better.

Jayme, get that lipped looked at. My mom thought she had a cold sore that wouldn't heal for months and her dentist was the one that told her to get it checked out.

Dear oh dear! Sorry to hear about your Mom, Mrs G.! Hope she is on the mend real soon....I will pray and send good wishes your way xxoo Also, major congrats on the weight loss and fitness gain! Yay, you! I think kettlebells look very sinister and to be avoided. I work out at a gym and I lost 37lb in the past year. Takes real commitment doesnt it?. Yay, me! Forty-whatever IS the new thirty-whatever...

Don't forget to wear your "man shoes". You'll need to be wearing something comfortable if you're going to spend that much time hearing FOX News in the background.

Very best wishes as required, Mrs G. I'm looking forward to your battle stories.

Get well soon, Grandma G! And Mrs. G.: Those are some mad stats. Congrats on the fitness thing. Once again you are my hero (heroine).

Holy Hell, Mrs. G.....You are rocking the workouts!!! Good job, girl!!! wiiitwooo! (that was a whistle!) Keep up the great work!! and as for those kettlebells? my brother ("the trainer/coach") and his sons ("young studs in training") work the 'bells every evening in their backyard. they looked menaciing and I was told that they weren't for the fainthearted.
I'm inspired....and bowing down in your direction!

Good luck with your mom...hope she's on the mend and no one gets taken out in the process.
(I can go to a shrine and see if I can find an amulet for good luck for you....if you want!! let me know!!)

Eight inches in ten weeks? OMG, Mrs. G! I am not worthy.

Sending light to your Mom and Stepfather.

Awesome results! Good on ya, Mrs. G!

Is it enough to get me off my unmotivated, flabby, backside...? Almost.

Hope things go well for your mom and the rest of you.

May 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterL

Your thus-far results are amazing! Don't let the stress at your mom's knock you off track. I'll be sending good vibes.

May 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

Your inches lost from your waist is inspiring of. Go you!

I'll say prayers for the lot of you.

Yay Mrs. G! My mom lost 200 pounds in two years by working out and eating right--I believe in the power of working out three times a week. Seems like you do too now! Yay!

I'm sending good thoughts (may they penetrate the vicodin haze) to your mom!

May 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJessie

8 inches off your waist???? And a huge reduction in body phat? You are going to be hogging ALL the cabana boys! And you are about to win a medal for bravery as well. Here is your mantra: This will make a great post. This will make a great post. This will make......

Best of luck and health to all.

Great on the work-out news. And when Mom gets your goat, just go do a couple of reps to burn off the steam.

Good luck to Mom - take care of Step-dad.

Way to go Mrs. G! I am very proud of you. Sending prayers up for your Mom and stepfather.

May 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterNana B

You are doing so well! I am glad you stuck with it long enough to find things you really enjoy. I see women doing those kettleballs at my gym and It does not appeal to me (or my compressed disc) at all...I hope that your mom can see through her pain and past your shoes to compliment your buff bod.

Best to all of you in the weeks ahead.

Holy crap Mrs. G. You rock. God bless you, your stepfather and your mama.

Awesome on the work out! I just started...and I'm not really telling anyone either....but I do feel better after only 2 weeks! I hope I can have results like yours. I'm sending good thoughts to your Mom, Stepdad and of course you and yours! Godspeed Mrs. G!

May 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDiane Carol

Mrs G!! Way to go!!! Not only are you getting very buff indeed - but you are approaching it in such a healthy way. Focusing on the right results - the health/fitness level, and not what's on the scale.

I love personal training. It's not just learning how to properly use all of the gym equipment and the weights. It's also my accountability partner making sure that I show up on those days!

Also, I will be praying for your Mom - that she recovers quickly, and with minimal pain. Also for your step dad & you. (and to everyone your mom has on speed dial...) Yikes! I hope he got enough wine!

May 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJustJuli

Sorry 'bout your Mom's bad luck... We're pulling for her on the East Coast!

Also, way to get FOXY, Mrs. G! Strong is sexy. Strong is wise. I'm working on that lately myself, though I so still have a meaningful relationship with my scale.

May 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCDG

Sending good thoughts your way. And congrats on your fitness success! Any tips on concentrating the efforts on certain body areas? The 2" breast reduction would leave me... deflated.

Annie, I have been deflated since nursing two kids and I'm a DDD. I'm used to feeling my breasts lay slightly on my rib cage sans bra. The only thing I can think to help them is a good bra or surgery (and that ain't happening). The good news is that even though they are deflated, they are smaller which means a good bra can push them up even more!"
